Recently launched a new series- the Wednesday Weekly Review- in which we will share our opinions on some logo designs of real-life brands in Africa and around the world. With this series, we hope to raise appreciation of logo design best practices and also share some insights on logo design does and dont’s.
To kick off our review of logos we will start with an international logo, not only because it is a great point of reference but because the methods used in creating this identity are very intentional. The Netflix logo originally was 3D in design and if you can’t remember it that’s because the new one was created for that sole purpose of sticking in your mind. A logo as with any identity has to be memorable and not just a fancy typeface or a font as we all call it. As we mentioned earlier in our first post on this series, the less the colours used the better even though some brands have multiple well-blended colours.
In ‘recreating’ the Netflix logo, Gretel states, ”Netflix needed a brand through-line: a conceptual and visual thread to connect everything. They say that their challenge was to create something broad enough for a global brand but still unique and identifiable. They had to create something variable yet systematic and bulletproof. It had to be visually striking, adapt to any format, and hold up to interpretation by agencies and vendors around the globe.
Their solution was -The Stack!- a visual metaphor and an identity system in one. It implies both the infinite, ever-changing catalogue and the custom-curated selections that make up the core of the Netflix service.” This to us was GENIOUS!
So in conclusion when creating a logo or brand – a topic we will gradually get into – make sure to be intentional about what you want your design to convey and represent, especially to your clientele. If you are not ready to go through this by yourself, then get in touch and we will help bring your brand to life!
